Making a Sale

Choose the tab that relates to your terminal type:

  1. Sagepay Verifone
  2. Ingenico
  3. Spire / Hypercom
  4. Verifone

Sagepay Verifone

Chip and PIN transactions

  1.  Insert the chip card into the terminal.
  2. Key in the amount of the sale and press Enter.
  3. Ask the customer to enter their PIN into the terminal and press Enter.
  4. Do not remove the card until prompted to do so or the transaction will be void. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the transaction.

Swiped transactions

  1. Swipe the customer’s card in the terminal. Make sure that the magnetic stripe is facing down and towards the body of the terminal, and swipe quickly in either direction.
  2. Key in the amount of the sale and press Enter.
  3. Ask the customer to sign the receipt.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the transaction.

Transactions with gratuity (tips)

This feature applies to certain businesses only.

  1.  Insert or swipe the customer’s card as above.
  2. Key in the amount of the sale and press Enter. The prompt for the option to add a gratuity is displayed.
  3. Hand the terminal to the customer, who can choose YES to add a gratuity or NO.
  4. If the customer chooses YES, they then key in the amount of the gratuity and press Enter.
  5. The customer will verify by either entering their PIN or signing the receipt, whichever applies.
  6. In the case of a chip card, do not remove the card until prompted to do so or the transaction will be void. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the transaction.

Contactless

Contactless payment can be used (on some terminal types) to accept payment for sales of up to €15/£20.

  1. Key in the amount of the sale and press Enter.
  2. The cardholder holds their card up to the reader until a short beep is produced.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the transaction.

Mail or telephone orders

This feature applies to certain businesses only

  1. Choose the SALE option.
  2. Key in the customer’s card number and press Enter.
  3. Key in the card expiry date and press Enter.
  4. Choose NO to the Customer present? prompt.
  5. Key in the sale amount .
  6. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the transaction.

Duplicate receipts

To print a duplicate receipt:

  1. Select the DUPLICATE option.
  2. To print a duplicate receipt of the most recent transaction, press Enter.
  3. To print a duplicate receipt of any other transaction, key in the transaction sequence number (printed on the original receipt) and press Enter.

Declined transaction

If the card issuer has declined to authorise the transaction, ask the customer to pay by other means.

Ingenico

Chip and PIN transactions

1. At the READY prompt, insert the chip card into the terminal.
2. Key in the amount of the sale and press Enter.
3. Ask the customer to enter their PIN into the terminal and press Enter.
4. Do not remove the card until prompted to do so or the transaction will be void. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the transaction.

Chip and signature transactions

1. At the READY prompt, insert the chip card into the terminal.

2. Key in the amount of the sale and press Enter. A merchant copy of the transaction receipt is printed with a signature line.

3. Tear off the receipt and pass it to the customer.

4. The customer should sign the receipt, remove the card from the terminal and pass the card and the signed receipt back to you.

5. Check that the customer’s signature matches that on the back of the card.

6. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the transaction

Swiped transactions

1. Key in the amount of the sale and press Enter.

2. Swipe the customer’s card in the terminal. Make sure that the magnetic stripe is facing down and towards the body of the terminal, and swipe quickly in either direction. (Note: If the card is a Chip and PIN card, you will not be able to complete the transaction as a swiped transaction – follow the directions for Chip and PIN transactions, above.)

2. Ask the customer to sign the receipt.

3. Check that the customer’s signature matches that on the back of the card.

4. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the transaction.

Transactions with gratuity (tips)
This feature applies to certain businesses only

1. Insert or swipe the customer’s card as above.

2. Key in the amount of the sale and press Enter. The prompt for the option to add a gratuity is displayed.

3. Hand the terminal to the customer, who can choose YES to add a gratuity or NO.

4. If the customer chooses YES, they then key in the amount of the gratuity and press Enter.

5. The terminal will either ask for a PIN or prompt you to seek a signature, whichever applies.

6. In the case of a chip card, do not remove the card until prompted to do so or the transaction will be void. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the transaction.

Contactless
Contactless payment can be used (on some terminal types) to accept payment for sales of up to €15 or £20.

1. Key in the amount of the sale and press Enter. The contactless logo (swipe) appears on screen if the sale amount is less than €15 / £20.

2. The cardholder holds their card up to the reader until a short beep is produced.

3. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the transaction.

Note: no cardholder receipt is printed for a contactless transaction; the only receipt that prints is the merchant receipt.

Mail or telephone orders
This feature applies to certain businesses only

1. Press MENU, choose the SALE option and enter the sale amount.

2. Key in the customer’s card number and press Enter.

3. Key in the card expiry date and press Enter.

4. Choose NO to the Customer present? prompt

5. Ask the customer for their CSC / CVV number – this is the 3-digit security code printed on the signature panel on the back of the card; enter it into the terminal when prompted.

6. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the transaction.

7. Send the customer receipt to the customer by mail.

Duplicate receipts
To print a duplicate receipt, press MENU, select Duplicate Receipt and press Enter.

Declined transaction

Spire / Hypercom

3. Ask the customer to enter their PIN into the terminal and press Enter.
4. Do not remove the card until prompted to do so or the transaction will be void. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the transaction.

3. Choose NO to the Customer present? Prompt.

4. Key in the sale amount .

5. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the transaction.

Duplicate receipts
To print a duplicate receipt.

1. Press the navigation button next to ‘sel’. The arrow on the right will change to REPR.

2. Press REPR and the terminal will print the duplicate receipt.

Declined transaction
If the card issuer declines to authorise the transaction, ask the customer to pay by other means.

Verifone

Chip and PIN transactions

1. Insert the chip card into the terminal.

2. Key in the amount of the sale and press Enter or press the green tick mark displayed on the terminal touchscreen.

3. Hand the terminal to the customer and ask them to enter their PIN into the terminal.

4. When the customer returns the terminal, press Enter to continue the transaction.

5. Do not remove the card until prompted to do so or the transaction will be void. When the transaction is authorised, the terminal prints the merchant receipt; the customer copy is printed when ‘Yes’ is selected in the final screen to complete the transaction.

Swiped transactions

1. Key in the amount of the sale and press Enter

2. Swipe the customer’s card in the terminal. Make sure that the magnetic stripe is facing down and towards the body of the terminal, and swipe quickly in either direction. (Note: If the card is a Chip and PIN card, you will not be able to complete the transaction as a swiped transaction; follow the directions for Chip and PIN transactions, above.)

3. When the transaction is authorised, a customer receipt is printed with a signature line; ask the customer to sign this receipt.

4. Check that the customer’s signature matches that on the back of the card.

5. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the transaction.

Transactions with gratuity (tips)
This feature applies to certain businesses only

1. Insert or swipe the customer’s card as above.

2. Key in the amount of the sale and press Enter. The prompt for the option to add a gratuity is displayed.

3. Hand the terminal to the customer, who can choose YES to add a gratuity or NO,

4. If the customer chooses YES, they then key in the amount of the gratuity and press Enter (or press ‘OK’ on the terminal touchscreen).

5.The customer verifies the transaction by either entering their PIN or signing the receipt, whichever applies.

6. If the customer signs, check that the customer’s signature matches that on the back of the card.

7. In the case of a chip card, do not remove the card until prompted to do so or the transaction will be void. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the transaction.

Contactless

5. If asked, enter the CSC / CVV number – this is the 3-digit security code printed on the signature panel on the back of the card.

6. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the transaction.

7. Send the customer their receipt by mail.
